While researching The Chief, I scoured the lakefront in search of a likely candidate and did find a few large homes in ruins which had been gated and sat at the end of long overgrown lots. It was here the manor—home of the racketeer, Simon Shands, was born. The mansion also plays a part in my newest work, The Pain Doc. Read More 

Some of The Corridor’s best action takes place at Shand’s Manor, a restored Prohibition era mansion owned by Professor Jim Trombley who appears in each of my now ten books. Although fictitious, the manor has basis in fact. I began to develop it while working on The Allards Book Eight: The Chief. During Prohibition many homes along the water front were constructed or modified to receive clandestine liquor from Canada to be served it to its patrons. Sitting on the northwest end of the Cass Corridor is an oasis of culture. The setting of Wayne State University, The Hilberry Theater, and the Detroit Cultural Center including the Library and Institute of Art provides a perfect haven for our fugitive heroes to seek shelter. Nicole Allard is a doctor shopper, more accurately a professional patient actor similar to those used today to train medical students, and her background in theater makes her ideal for the job. Shoppers have been used for years by clinics or insurers. Many doctors see shoppers in their practice and never know it. They report to their employer the nature of the visit—what was done and how, allowing the third party to determine the quality and value of the visit as well as the practice. Later shoppers like Nicole were used by insurers to investigate improper billing. Finally they were used by the government to root out criminal fraud. Initially they were government agents, but when I saw the administration considering using professional shoppers instead, Jack hired Nicole and the fun (and chase scenes) began.  Read More 

Although like the Allard Series, The Corridor is based on actual stories from the news and court cases, is at base a work of fiction as are the actual events and characters. In some ways this is more fun than historical fiction where the author is tied to a certain body of facts. When the characters won’t behave, they can be changed or fired. I’ve been asked to blog a bit about my latest work, The Corridor, a modern-day tale of medical fraud in the slums of the Motor City.
Upon completion of the The Allard Series. I began to wonder how I would while away my spare hours. It was at that time Susan returned from a legal seminar on healthcare fraud armed with wonderful tales of healthcare scammers and cheats.
